Numerology 101: a gentle starter guide

10 Sep 2026

If you have been curious about numerology but were not sure where to start, this is for you. No jargon, no fear — just an honest explanation.

What is numerology, really?

It is an old interpretive practice — with Vedic, Chaldean and Pythagorean roots — that looks at the numbers within your name and birth date. Every letter carries a number, your birth date reduces to one core number, and together they form a kind of portrait. It is not a science, and we will never pretend it is. Think of it as a mirror for reflection, not a window into the future.

The two numbers to know first

Life Path comes from your birth date — your natural direction and the themes that keep returning. Name number comes from the letters of your name — the energy you carry into the world. Read together, they show where your life flows easily and where it asks for a little more patience.

How it is calculated

You add the digits and reduce them to a single number. A birthday of 15 becomes 1 + 5 = 6. Names work the same way, using letter values. The one exception: the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept as they are, because tradition holds that they carry a stronger charge.

What is actually worth your time

Ignore anyone selling fear or promising guaranteed outcomes. The genuinely useful part is gentle self-reflection — and, if your name and birth date feel out of step, a small, still-sayable change to your spelling that brings them closer. That is all it is meant to be.
